Applied Mathematician

ChefSteps is looking for an applied mathematician to help us revolutionize the kitchen. Can you find the signal in noisy data and make long-range predictions? Does the Oracle of Delphi have nothing on you? Oh, and hey, do you want to develop automated algorithms that’ll analyze noisy multivariate time-series data in near real-time to make long-term predictions? If you answered yes to all these questions, you probably want to read on.

Us:

We are a Seattle-based cooking and technology company dedicated to inspiring home cooks to cook more often and have more fun doing it. We design products that solve problems, boost creative instincts, and encourage experimentation in the home kitchen. And we’re constantly developing algorithms that use advanced math, science, and engineering to help people cook smarter.

You:

We’re looking for a coworker with an insatiable curiosity who has seen a few products through from start to finish. If you’re the kind of scientist who prefers learning and using tools from many subfields to finding problems that your favorite tool solves, and if you’re comfortable working with programmers, marketers, cooks, and designers, then this may be the position for you.

At ChefSteps, you won’t stick to any one subfield: on any given day, you may need to numerically solve differential equations; use frequentist and Bayesian techniques for model selection; use unscented Kalman filters to track system state; or use supervised machine learning to classify outlier events. Our current algorithms use ideas from applied mathematics, statistics, machine learning, thermodynamics, chemistry, and physics. For an example of the kind of project you may be working on, take a look at our Egg Calculator, which determines the water temperature and cooking time you’ll need to achieve the white texture and yolk viscosity of your choice. We used pseudo-spectral methods to model heat flow in the egg and the kinetics of protein denaturation to estimate the yolk’s viscosity, and after developing the code, we empirically and deliciously verified its predictions. So if you’re flexible, love food, and would enjoy tackling the wide range of problems that come up at a multidisciplinary company, we can’t wait to hear from you.

Requirements:

-A PhD in mathematics or a related field

One More Thing:

At ChefSteps, we love everyone. We’re an equal opportunity employer that values diversity, and we don’t discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, disability status, vegan & vegetarian status, or really any status whatsoever. If you’re alive, you’re damn good at some stuff, you eat things sometimes, and you think you can help make ChefSteps better, we want to hear from you.
